With no system to check that the correct product was being packaged in the appropriate packaging, this was something that the manufacturer was fully aware of, as they had previously suffered from this.
After the bread is baked it travels along a conveyor and upward onto a huge carousel where it is positioned in packaging order. From here it comes down another conveyor and into a large storage area. Operators manually feed the bread onto an automated packaging machine for its final run where it is duly packaged.
Occasionally the bread/cakes become “out of sync” with the automated packing machine which affects the quality of the packaging. Consequently, an operator was assigned to observe and check the packaging on every item to ensure customer compliance.
The labour costs associated to implementing the checking across 3 shifts was deemed unacceptable to management. Clearly they required a reliable packaging validation system.
With many years experience in the food industry, DataScan was consulted and recommended their VeriBox Barcode Validation / Verification System.
The solution was to install a VeriBox packaging validation system with a Datalogic fixed position barcode scanner. The scanner was positioned to read barcodes on correctly packaged goods giving a ‘good read’ and a green light.
However, on poorly packaged goods the barcode was either distorted or out of place and hence the barcode failed to read – thus giving a ‘no read’ and a red light. On detection of a no-read, the VeriBox system stops the line and alerts an operator to the fault and allows them to take the necessary remedial action. Consequently a full time operator is no longer required to oversee the packaging machine.
This system has completely eliminated the risk of badly packaged goods being despatched to suppliers, potentially resulting in heavy fines and loss of contracts.
Veribox has also contributed to making the whole packaging and despatch process more efficient thus saving time & money.
